To snuffle is to breathe noisily through your nose, in short wet-sounding pulls. It is the sound of a blocked nose, so you snuffle when you have a cold, and you snuffle when you have been crying and are trying to stop — that soft , half-swallowed sound a child makes after the tears. It is a quieter, sadder, more continuous word than **: a is usually one sharp pull, while a snuffle goes on. Animals snuffle too, and here the feeling is completely different — warm and friendly. A dog snuffles along the ground when it is searching for a smell, pushing its nose into the grass and breathing hard; a pig snuffles in the dirt. When people use it about animals it sounds , never sad. Snuffle is also a noun: you can give a snuffle, or hear the snuffles of a small dog. And in familiar speech, *the snuffles* means a light cold — "the baby's got the snuffles" — a gentle way of saying nothing serious, just a stuffy nose.

組成Probably taken from Low German and Dutch snuffelen, to snuffle. Built from snuff (to draw air sharply up the nose) plus -le, an ending that makes an action small and repeated. English does this a lot: it turns one action into a series of little ones.
