A snit is a small bad mood you have got yourself into. The word almost never travels alone — you meet it in in a snit, or get into a snit, or she's in a snit about the seating plan. Two things make it what it is. The size: a snit is short and about something small, not real grief or real anger. And the judgement: the person calling it a snit does not think it is justified. You never describe your own feelings as a snit while you are having them; snit is what other people call it, usually with a little smile. There is often sulking in the picture too — going quiet, closing a door harder than needed, refusing to join in. It is informal and mostly American, and it is worth knowing that the word carries a hint of not taking the person seriously. That makes it useful in stories and a bit dangerous in real life: telling someone they are in a snit is a fast way to make them angrier, because you have just called their feelings childish.

組成American English, and the origin is genuinely unknown — dictionaries can only guess.
