Sniffy is the look of someone who thinks a thing is beneath them. Picture the small sniff people give when they smell something they do not like — that tiny lift of the nose. The word takes that gesture and uses it for an attitude: you think something is cheap, low quality, or not good enough for a person like you, and you let it show. It is usually built with about or of: sniffy about instant coffee, sniffy about my old car, sniffy about pop music. Two things are worth knowing. First, it is much more common in British English than American, and it feels quite informal and a bit light — you use it to tease someone for being a snob, not to make a serious accusation. Second, the disapproval is looking DOWN. If you dislike something because it is dangerous or wrong, sniffy is the wrong word; sniffy is for when you dislike something because it is not classy enough. There is a second, much rarer use where sniffy simply means smelling bad, but the snobbish meaning is the one you will actually meet in reading.
