A snail is a small, slow-moving animal with a soft body and a hard, round shell on its back that it carries everywhere and can hide inside. Snails move on land or in water and leave a thin, wet, shiny trail behind them as they go. Because they move so slowly, 'snail' is also used to describe anything very slow — 'at a snail's pace' means extremely slowly. In some countries, especially France, snails are also eaten as food. 'Snails' is simply the plural, more than one snail.
