Describing someone whose teeth are uneven, crooked, gappy, or broken — teeth that stick out at odd angles instead of sitting in a neat row. It is a picture word, used far more in stories than in daily speech: a snaggle-toothed old pirate, a snaggle-toothed grin. Because it draws attention to the mouth, it usually sounds unkind about a person, so you would not say it to someone's face or use it about a friend. In fiction, though, it is often affectionate in a rough way — a snaggle-toothed dog you love, a snaggle-toothed old man who turns out to be the kind one. Writers reach for it because it does a lot of work in one word: you immediately see the face, and often guess the character is poor, old, wild, or has had a hard life. It is also used of animals, especially dogs. The related noun snaggletooth means one such tooth. Dentists and doctors do not use this word; they would say crooked teeth or a misaligned bite.
