A smirk is a smile that people. It is small, often one-sided, and it says something the person is not saying out loud: 'I know something you don't', 'I was right and you were wrong', 'I'm enjoying this'. It is the face of someone who is pleased about your trouble, or pleased with themselves. Smirk is both a verb (to smirk, he smirked at me) and a noun (a smirk, wipe that smirk off your face). The judgement is in the word itself — nobody smirks in a nice way, so calling someone's smile a smirk is already saying you dislike it. It is common in stories and in ordinary talk. Interestingly, the word did not always mean this: for hundreds of years it just meant 'to smile', and the unpleasant meaning grew later.
組成From Old English smearcian, meaning simply 'to smile'. It shares a family with 'smile' itself. The mocking meaning only appeared in later centuries — before the 1700s it could still mean an ordinary smile.
