    As a noun, a smiley is a little face made out of keyboard marks, read by tilting your head to the left: :-) is happy, :-( is sad, ;-) is a wink. People put them in emails and messages to show the tone — to say 'I'm joking' or 'I'm not angry'. This is the older kind. Today most people send a picture-face instead (an 😊), and many speakers now say 'smiley' for those too, or say 'smiley face' for the round yellow one. So if a student sees 'smiley' in a modern text, it may mean either. The word is also an adjective meaning cheerful and smiling a lot — 'a smiley baby', 'she's very smiley'. That use is friendly and casual, and it describes a person's usual look, not one single smile.

組成smile + -y. The -y ending makes an adjective, the way 'sleep' becomes 'sleepy' — so 'smiley' first meant 'smiling a lot'. The noun came later, cut short from 'smiley face'.
