Smellies is a cheerful, informal British word for nice-smelling things you put on your body or in your bath — perfume, bath oil, soap, body , shower gel. It is the kind of word used when talking about presents: 'I got Mum some smellies for her birthday.' Notice what it does: it gathers a whole set of gift-shop things under one easy name, so you do not have to list them. It is always plural — you cannot buy 'a ' — and it takes a plural verb: the smellies are on the shelf. The tone is light and a little , mostly women's talk and family talk, and it belongs to Britain rather than America. It is friendly, never rude, but too casual for writing at work. What is quietly funny about it is that it is built on , which on its own means bad-smelling — here the family has turned the word around to mean the opposite.
