A farmer who works a small piece of land — a smallholding. Usually a family growing food and keeping a few animals, with enough to eat and a little left to sell, rather than a business with machines and hired workers. The word is British, and it is also the standard word in development and aid writing, where you meet phrases like "smallholder farmers in Africa and Asia". In that world it carries real weight: most of the world's food is grown by people like this, and they are the ones with no cushion when the rain fails. In Britain today it has a second, gentler life. People who leave the city to keep chickens, goats and vegetables on a few acres call themselves smallholders. That is a choice, often alongside another job — closer to a way of living than to survival. There is no scorn in the word at all. Unlike "small-time", it simply says how much land. Americans would more often say "small farmer" or "small-scale farmer".
