You can think of a machine standing still and dead until one thing happens: a coin drops through a narrow opening in its front. That opening is the slot, and it is the whole idea in the name. The machine does not care who you are or what you know; it wakes up because money went through the slot, and then it gives you something back. What it gives back is where the two meanings part company.
