A sloop is a small sailing ship with one main mast — one tall pole for the sails — in the middle. The usual setup has a large sail behind that mast and a smaller one at the front. For a long time it was a common working boat and a navy boat, small enough to be quick. People still use the word for certain sailing yachts. It is a sailor's word; you will see it in stories about the sea more than in city talk. English borrowed it from Dutch sloep. An older English boat-word, shallop, is a — the same Dutch idea, a different journey into English.
