A sloe is a small, round, dark fruit, a bit like a tiny plum. It grows on the blackthorn bush. If you bite one raw, it is very sour and makes your mouth dry and tight — most people do not eat them straight from the tree. In Britain people pick sloes after the first frost and put them in gin with sugar to make sloe gin, a deep red drink. The skin is -black, which is why older English also used sloe for that dark colour, and why sloe-eyed means having dark, almond-shaped eyes. The word is very old English, from a Germanic root that meant '.'
