Sloaney describes a kind of young English person — most often a young woman — from a rich upper-class family. The picture in people's heads is quite specific: expensive, rather country-style clothes, a accent, conservative , and a lot of time spent shopping in smart bits of west London, especially Chelsea and Sloane Square. It can be an adjective (a Sloaney girl, a Sloaney accent) as well as a way of naming the type. In the 1980s the papers talked about Sloane Rangers all the time; it was a joke, a fashion label, and a class dig at once. People still know the word, but it is starting to feel old-fashioned, as if you were still speaking in 1985. You hear it in British English, often with a raised . It is not a compliment, though it is not always meant to be cruel.
