    A slingshot is a small Y-shaped stick — or a bit of metal in that shape — with a thin rubber band across the top. You put a small stone in the band, pull back, and let go; the stone flies. Children have used them as toys, but they can hurt, so many adults treat them as weapons, not games. American English likes slingshot; British English often says catapult for the same thing. A sling is older and different: a strap you swing around, like the one in the David and Goliath story. People also stretch slingshot as a verb: a car can slingshot past another car, and a spacecraft can slingshot around a planet — meaning it is thrown forward fast, as if from that rubber band. The object is the home meaning.
