This word has two completely different jobs, and it's easy to mix them up. First, 'a slew of' something means a large number of it - 'a slew of new movies came out this month' just means lots of new movies. Second, 'slew' is the old-fashioned past tense of the verb 'slay', meaning to kill - you'll mostly see this in old stories, like 'the knight slew the dragon'. Modern English usually uses 'killed' instead, except in dramatic storytelling.
