A sleepover is a night at someone else’s house that is meant to be fun, almost always for children or teenagers: you take a bag, you stay until morning, and the point is games, films, talking in the dark, maybe a pillow fight. Though actually, just sleeping at another house is not enough to make it a sleepover. If you miss the last train and a friend lets you use the sofa, that is staying over, not a sleepover. Grown-ups almost never call their own night at a friend’s a sleepover; they say they are staying over or spending the night. The word is very at home in American English, and British speakers use it too now, though some older British people grew up with the verb (“sleep over at…”) more than the noun. You will meet both: “a sleepover on Friday” and “Can I sleep over at hers?” The noun is what goes on invitations.
