A sled is a vehicle without wheels, used for sliding over snow or ice. Small sleds are for fun - kids sit on them and slide down snowy hills. Bigger sleds can be pulled by dogs or people to carry things across snow, like in the Arctic. In American English, 'sled' is the common word; British English more often says 'sledge' for the same thing.
