SLD was a short name for the Social and Liberal Democrats, a British political party. In the late 1980s the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party came together; for a short time the new party used this name, then it became the Liberal Democrats (often Lib Dems). You will meet SLD in older British news and in history books, not on today’s campaign posters. It is a proper name, always in capitals. Though actually, other groups in other fields also use the letters SLD, so the surrounding sentence has to tell you that you are in British . This entry is only the party.
