Slavonic means Slavic: of the Slav peoples, or of the languages they speak. Russian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Bulgarian, Serbian and several others are Slavonic languages. In British English, older books and some careful writers still say Slavonic; many people now say Slavic instead, and they mean the same family. You will still meet Old Church Slavonic — an old written language used in church in parts of Eastern Europe — under this name, and that label has not really been replaced. It can be an adjective (Slavonic languages) or a name for the group. Capital S is normal because it points to a people and a language family, like Germanic or Romance. It does not mean “slave,” even though the two spellings sit close together on the page.
