A slalom is a race down a winding path. The path is marked with flags or , and you must go around them in order, left then right, without missing a gate. People do this on skis — that is the picture most meet first — but there is also slalom in a canoe or kayak, through gates hanging over moving water. The course is not a straight line; the whole point is the bends. Though actually, people also stretch the word: a driver who weaves through cones might say they are slaloming, and a making lots of quick turns may say they slalom even when it is not a real race. As a verb it means to move that way: to slalom down the hill. It is a sports word. You hear it most around winter sports, boat racing, and the Olympics.
組成From Norwegian sla ('steep hillside') and låm ('trail'). English borrowed the whole word; it does not split into English pieces.
