Skylab was the first American space station, sent up in 1973. Astronauts went there to live for a while and do scientific tests and other work in space. It was not a ship that flew to the Moon; it was more like a workplace that stayed in orbit around the Earth, and crews visited it. In 1979 it came back into the Earth's air and burned up — pieces fell, some into the ocean and Western Australia, which was in the news at the time. The name is sky + lab, short for laboratory: a lab in the sky. Though actually people sometimes talk as if Skylab were still up there, or mix it up with later stations such as Mir or the International Space Station. Skylab was earlier, American, and it is gone. Always a capital S — it is a proper name, not a general word for any lab in space.
