Skye is an island off the northwest coast of Scotland. It is the largest island of the Inner — a group of islands on that side of Scotland — and it has many mountains. People often speak of it as wild, beautiful, and a little romantic, the sort of place you see in photographs and old songs. The most famous song is The Skye Boat Song, with the line 'over the sea to Skye,' about a prince being rowed to the island long ago. Before a bridge was built in the 1990s, you really could only get there by boat; now you can drive across. Always write it with a capital S: it is a place name. It sounds exactly like sky, but it is not that word. There is also a small dog, the Skye , named after the island.
組成From Scottish Gaelic An t-Eilean Sgitheanach. Where that Gaelic name itself comes from is long disputed; it is probably from an older local language, not the same family as English, and none of the theories is widely accepted.
