    A skunkworks is a place — or a small team — inside a large company that is given room to invent something new, usually faster than the company’s normal slow process would allow. The company still pays them, but it leaves them alone, often in a quiet corner away from head office. The name began as a nickname, around 1943, for Lockheed’s secret aircraft team, later official as Skunk Works. They took it from a joke in the American comic strip Li’l Abner, where the “Skonk Works” was a filthy shed that cooked “skonk oil.” The smell-joke stuck because the real work was messy, unofficial, and a bit rule-breaking. Today people in business and tech use skunkworks for any fast, protected little lab inside a giant firm. It is workplace English, not a legal term.
