Skopje is the capital city of the country now called North Macedonia, in the north of that country, on the River Vardar. It is the biggest city there — the government sits there, and most visitors fly into its airport. Older English books, and some maps, still say Macedonia, or the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (a long official name used after Yugoslavia broke up). Though actually, the country added “North” to its name after a long quarrel with Greece about the word Macedonia. The city itself is still Skopje. In English it is a place name, so it takes a capital S. People often say it roughly as SKOP-yay.
