1. 1

To skimp is to use too little of something — money, time, material, or care — so the result is weak or of bad quality. If you skimp on sleep, you are tired the next day. If a builder skimps on the wood, the shelf does not last. The word feels a little sharp: you should have used more, and it shows. It is not the same as being carefully cheap in a smart way; skimp says the cheapness hurt the work. You will most often hear skimp on + a noun. Informal to neutral; common in complaints.

組成Perhaps from a North Germanic root (Proto-Germanic *skimpijaną, to skip, dance, gesture, mock). Cognate with Icelandic skimpa (to scorn), dialectal Swedish skimpa (to skip, dance), Faroese skumpa (to shove), German schimpfen (to scold), Dutch schimpen (to mock or scold). Probably related to scamp and scrimp; a distant link to change is only a maybe.
