A skillet is a flat, heavy cooking pan with a long handle. You use it on the stove to fry and brown food. In American English this is the everyday word; in British English people more often say frying pan. The classic skillet is wide and shallow, often cast iron, so it stays hot. Though actually, in US shops 'skillet' can also mean a lighter non-stick frying pan — the 'heavy' part is the old picture, not every pan on the shelf. It is not a (higher sides, for boiling) and not a deep pot.
