Skiffle is a kind of popular music from Britain in the 1950s. Bands were often small and cheap to start: people sang and played guitar, and they also used things they made themselves — a washboard to , a wooden box with a broom stick for a bass. It sits somewhere between folk, jazz, and very early rock and roll. Young people played it in clubs and halls because you did not need expensive gear. It was a short fashion, but it mattered: some later famous groups began as skiffle bands. Though actually, not every skiffle group used only homemade instruments; that is the picture people remember. Today the word points to that 1950s homemade, folky-pop sound, not to pop music in general.
