An American clothes rail counts — 6, 4, 2 — and then there is one more label below the last number, marked 0. That small tag at the end of the rail can be taken as the picture behind both meanings. One meaning stays on the tag: the smallest size a shop sells. The other lifts the tag off the and puts it on a person, so a very thin woman gets called a size zero.
