1. 1

Your sinuses are hollow spaces inside the bones of your face and head. They open into the inside of your nose. You cannot see them from the outside, but you can feel them: when they fill up, your face and your voice sounds stuffed. There are several pairs, around the nose and the forehead. Doctors name them one by one; in ordinary talk the word almost always comes up because something hurts. People say “my sinuses are bad” when they have a cold or an allergy — though actually they may mean their whole nose feels blocked, not only those little caves in the bone.
