A singlet is a piece of clothing for the top of the body with no sleeves. You wear it for sport, or in some places as a light in hot weather. It covers the chest and back, and leaves the arms free. The word is especially British, Australian, and New Zealand; American speakers more often say tank top for the sports or casual kind, and for the one under other clothes. Though actually, even in Britain a singlet for sport is the close cousin of a running vest: thin, simple, and made to move in. It is an everyday clothes word, not a fancy one.
