A simulator is a machine that lets you feel what real conditions are like, so you can train without the real danger. The classic picture is a flight simulator: a cockpit that moves, with screens for the sky, so a pilot can practise a storm on the ground. Driving simulators and surgery simulators work the same way. The -or ending names the thing that does the simulating. Though actually, people now also say simulator for a computer program, not only a big physical machine — a phone app that pretends to be a cockpit still gets the name. In everyday English it is technical but widely understood, especially around planes, cars, and games. It is not, today, the person. An older use could mean someone who pretends; now you almost always mean the device or the software.
