1. 1

Silvan is the same word as sylvan, only spelled with an i. It means of the woods: a silvan scene is a forest scene, shady, leafy, a little like a painting. Poets and older books like it. Nobody uses it to order lunch. You may also meet Silvan as a given name. The usual modern spelling in English is sylvan, with a y; silvan looks a bit more Latin and a bit more old-fashioned. Though actually, even sylvan is already a word. In speech people just say wooded, forest, or in the woods. If a text says silvan, read it as “of the forest,” and do not look for silver in it.
