Silicone is a man-made chemical, more like a plastic or a rubber than a metal. Heat does not ruin it easily, nor does cold. Water sits on it and does not soak through. That is why it turns up in so many places: kitchen moulds and spatulas, waterproof paint, rubbery seals, and also artificial body parts, including some implants. It can be a soft gel, a bouncy rubber, or a thick paste you squeeze from a tube. The word is ordinary in shops and hospitals; it is not fancy. Though actually, people say “silicon” when they mean this, because the two words look like twins. They are not. Silicon is the element in a computer chip. Silicone is a long chain built from silicon, oxygen, and carbon-like bits — chemists first made it while trying to copy a ketone, a different family of compounds. In daily talk the paste in the bathroom, the baking tray, and the implant are all “silicone,” even though the feel is not the same.
