Silage is grass, , or other plants that farmers cut while still green, then pack tightly in a closed place so the plants change a little (they ferment) and keep through the winter. Cattle eat this when there is no fresh grass. It smells strong and sour; that smell is meant to be there. Farmers also use it as a verb: to silage a crop is to turn it into this winter food. Though actually, silage is not hay. Hay is dried in the sun. Silage is stored wet on purpose. People sometimes wave the word at anything in a silo; the careful meaning is this wet, slightly fermented feed.
