A Sikh is a person who follows , a religion that began in Punjab, in the north of India, in the 1500s. It grew in a Hindu world, but it is its own faith, with its own teachers (Gurus), its own holy book, and its own practices. Many Sikh men wear a ; that is the picture people know, though not every Sikh looks the same. The word is also an adjective: a Sikh temple, Sikh tradition. Always write it with a capital S — it is the name of a people and a faith, like Christian or Buddhist. This is how people name themselves, not a nickname from outside.
