Here, a signaller is a soldier or sailor whose job is to send and receive messages — signals — with flags, lights, or a radio. This is the forces meaning, not the railway worker who changes the signals for trains. British spelling is signaller, with two l's; American spelling is often signaler. Though actually, in the British army Signaller can also be a job title, sometimes written with a capital S. Outside the forces, people usually just say someone who works in communications.
