A sighting is one time when somebody sees a thing, especially something rare or something people are hoping to see. News stories talk about a whale sighting, a bird sighting, a sighting. Though actually, a sighting is only the seeing, or the claim of seeing; it does not prove what the thing was. You would not call seeing your bus a sighting. The word wants something a bit special.
