A sierra is a row of mountains with sharp peaks, like the teeth of a saw if you look at them from far away. That is why Spanish speakers used their word for a saw, and English borrowed it. It is not one mountain; it is the line of many. You meet it in place names, such as the Sierra Nevada, and in geography writing. In everyday English it is a little literary — a weather report might just say “the mountains.” Though actually, a lot of English speakers meet Sierra first as a girl’s name, a car, or the radio-alphabet word for the letter S. Those are other uses. This word, here, is the saw-tooth mountains.
