On a car, a sidelight is one of the two small lamps next to the big front headlights. They are not for lighting the road hard — the headlights do that. They are for being seen: when the sky is getting dark, in town, or when the car is sitting still. British English loves this word. American speakers more often say parking lights. Though actually, the name tricks people: these lights sit at the front, on each side of the main pair, not along the flanks of the car. The lamps on the flanks are a different thing. There is also a use — a sidelight on meaning an extra little fact — but here we mean the car lamps.
