A sidekick is the person who spends time with someone more important, and helps them. The hero has a sidekick; the boss has a sidekick. It is informal, and a little teasing — it can sound warm (a loyal friend) or a bit small (the , not the star). In comics and films the sidekick is almost a job: Robin is Batman's sidekick. You would not put it on a serious office door. The kick is not a kick with the foot. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, kick was slang for a trouser pocket, and the side pocket was the safest one, closest to you. A sidekick was your closest person, the one you keep near. That slang has died; the word stayed.

組成From side + kick. In the late 19th and early 20th century, kick was slang for the front side pocket of a pair of trousers, known as the pocket safest from theft. By analogy, a side-kick was a person's closest companion.
