A sickbay is a small room set aside for people who are ill or hurt, in a place that is far from a hospital — first on ships, then in schools, factories, army camps, summer camps and prisons. It has beds, some basic medicine, and often a nurse. It is not a hospital and not a doctor's clinic: it is where you lie down until you feel better, or until someone can take you somewhere with real doctors. British and Australian speakers use it most; in an American school the same room is usually called the nurse's office or the health room. The word comes from ships, where a "bay" is a marked-off part of a deck, and that sea flavour has never quite left it — which is why science fiction loves it, and why a spaceship on television always has a sickbay. You can write it sickbay or sick bay, both are common. It takes in: someone is taken to the sickbay, is in the sickbay, or in sports writing a whole team can be "in the sickbay", meaning several players are injured at once.
