A sickbag is the small paper bag you find tucked in the seat pocket on a plane, for people to vomit into if they feel ill. You also see them on boats and long-distance coaches, and in hospitals. The bag has a stiff top so you can hold it open, and it is lined so nothing leaks. It is a British-flavoured word, because British English uses "sick" as a noun and a verb for vomit ("he was sick", "there's sick on the floor"); Americans are more likely to say airsickness bag, air sickness bag, or barf bag, which is slangy. You will see the word written three ways — sickbag, sick bag, and sick-bag — and all are accepted; on planes the printed label usually says something more polite. There is also a joking use: people say something "needs a sickbag" or "pass the sickbag" when a film or a speech is so sweet or so false that it makes them feel ill. That use is friendly and rude at the same time, and it belongs in conversation, not in writing.
