Siam is the old name for the country we now call Thailand. English speakers, and many maps, used Siam until 1939. The name came back for a short time after the Second World War, then Thailand stayed. You still see Siam in old books, old stamps, and in Siamese cat. Siamese twins was the old name for babies born joined together; that name is dated and can hurt, so people now say twins. The country itself is Thailand; Siam is history.
暹羅（泰國舊稱）
組成English borrowed the name from Portuguese Sciam (“Thailand”), from Thai สยาม (sà-yǎam), the old name of the country. The same old root is the one in Shan, and probably in Assam.
