Shylock is a character in Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice. He is a Jewish money-lender in Venice. A merchant called Antonio borrows money from him. If Antonio cannot pay it back, Shylock says he may cut a pound of flesh from Antonio’s body. The play is still taught in schools, and people still argue about Shylock: the play makes him hard and hungry for that pound of flesh, but the Christians around him treat him too, and some readers feel the play is unfair to him as a Jew. Later, some English speakers used a Shylock for a cruel money-lender. That use is insulting. It leans on an old, ugly idea about Jewish people. You should know the character from the play. You should not use the name as a joke about money.
