Shrewsbury is a town in western England, close to the Welsh border. It sits on the River , has a castle and a very old centre, and is the main town of the county of Shropshire. People write Shrewsbury, but many in Britain say something like “SHROZE-buh-ree,” which does not match the letters — though some speakers do say the first part more like shrew. The name is not about the little animal. It comes from Old English for a fort in . You will also see Shrewsbury on cakes and in Britain; that still points back to the town.
