Shrewish describes a person — in older books, almost always a woman — who argues, nags, and disagrees, and will not let a quarrel go. It comes from shrew, once a rude name for a sharp-tempered woman as well as a small animal. You will still find it in notes on Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew. Though actually, living English has almost dropped it. Said today, it sounds old and unfair: it treats a sharp tongue as a woman’s fault. If you need the idea, say someone is , quarrelsome, or hard to please, and say it of anyone.
