A showground is a large piece of land kept for big outdoor events. The usual picture is a farming show: animals in a ring, machines, food stalls, and families walking around all day. A fete, a circus, or a concert can use the same land. You hear this word most in Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. In the United States people more often say fairgrounds. It is not a theatre and not a TV studio, even though the first half looks like that kind of show. It is the field itself, often with barns, a main ring, and a big car park. Some showgrounds sit quiet for most of the year and wake up for one famous week; others hold events all year.
