A shovelful is how much a shovel holds in one go — snow, earth, coal, sand. It is a countable amount-word, like handful or : one shovelful, two shovelfuls. You use it when the shovel is measuring the stuff, not when you mean the tool (that is just a shovel). How much it really is depends on the shovel and how high you pile it; it is a rough everyday measure, not a science unit.
