A shotgun is a long gun you hold against your shoulder. Instead of one pointed bullet, it usually sends out many small round balls, called shot, which spread as they fly. That is why hunters use it for birds and for animals close by: you do not have to aim as tightly as with a rifle. Police use shotguns too, at short range. It is a serious weapon word, not a toy word. People stretch it. Ride shotgun comes from the old guard who sat beside a driver with this gun; today children shout “Shotgun!” to claim the front passenger seat. A shotgun wedding is a wedding after a pregnancy — a set phrase, a little old-fashioned, and a little . The home meaning is still the gun.
