In baseball, the shortstop is the fielder who stands on the infield dirt between second base and third base and tries to stop ground balls hit to that side. They need quick feet and a strong arm, because a lot of balls go there, and the throw across to first is long. It is both the position and the person: “She is the shortstop.” The short in the name is not “a quick pause.” Old baseball put this player in as a close on the short side of the field, and the name stuck. You will not hear shortstop much outside baseball, except when someone is borrowing the picture. Taiwan baseball already has a daily name for this job, so many students here know the work before they know this English word.
